The complex presents a
spectacular view of American Lake in Lakewood and offers members and
guests a family-oriented space at the club which originally opened in
1894. John Korsmo Construction
began the $1.4 million design-build project in mid-January 2005. The
first swimmers dove in on July 4, 2005.
Total design and construction time was six months. It represented a major
construction challenge because it’s literally carved out of the side of
the hill leading from the club’s main deck to American Lake. The pool complex
is a triple-deck design that features an upper deck with outdoor seating connected by an elevator and
stairs to the lower deck. The half-Olympic-sized pool is surrounded by
the lower deck with outdoor seating, a spa and a children’s pool.
Finished concrete stairs lead down to the lakeside level. All
decking and stairs are finished concrete with metal railings. The
elevator shaft is concrete and wood-frame and features a clock-tower design.
The pool complex
attracted more than 80 new club members during the construction. All
were eager to use the facility.
Design:
Merritt Architects of Tacoma.
Project Features: Clock-tower elevator shaft, finished concrete
decking, fantastic views
Scope: $1.4 million
